Manchester, day 2
Jul. 3rd, 2007 06:21 pmStarted the day by going to the Manchester Science and Industry Museum. Free admission unless you're like us, who had tickets to the Doctor Who: Up Close exhibition.
They had some costumes and sets from the last three series and I got pictures of a select few, like the model for K9 Mark III (attention
kheetor84 and
scottrell001. Not as large an exhibit as I expected, though. Also got a few pictures of some of the objects on display in the rest of the museum, including some of the steam engines in their collection. At the shop, I bought a Tenth Doctor and K9 figurine set and a model of steam engine Flying Scotsman made out of coal.
After having lunch, my father went back to the room to rest (I wore him out! XD) while I went back downtown to the Manchester Art Gallery. They had quite a few nice paintings on display, including this one:

The story behind the painting is that one of the King Georges was given a cheetah as a gift, and it was kept at Windsor Castle. The two orderlies set it loose to hunt a stag in the grounds, but instead it jumped the fence and took out another deer in the forest. They let it fill its face before leashing it (not a bad idea).
I got to the gallery around 3:30, so I didn't have much time to wander the gallery before it closed at 5. Fortunately it was rather small, so I saw everything except for the modern and contemporary art gallery, which I wasn't interested in much. I stopped at the shop to get a few things, including a print of the painting above, a few postcards (including one of the above for a certain cheetah I know, attention
kheetor84 again), and a children's book called The Gallery Cat. Haven't read it yet, but it looks cute.
After that, I got on the tram back to my part of town. I was thinking of walking along the Ship Canal, which runs alongside the road below my window, but didn't get the chance because it started to rain. Ah well, next visit.
Tomorrow, the train to York and the Holy Land known as the National Railway Museum!
