My mother drove me in to work this morning as I was only doing a short shift and she needed to pick up a couple things at the store. On the way, we stopped by the row house that backs on to ours and dropped off that same kitten that keeps hanging around our house almost all day and night. His owners have a new baby in the house and spend a lot of their time in the basement, so they don't notice him as much. By the time she got home, he was back in our driveway.

Winter really gave us a blast of snow overnight, about ten inches' worth. It was a rough drive, which often required the use of first gear. Got to the store, and we went in. I told my mother I'd see her in five minutes or five hours, whichever occurred first. Turns out it was five minutes. I was just about to punch in when the fire alarm went off. I figured they were testing it, so I just went on as usual. Turns out they were serious and evacuated the store! No fire, though; our alarm is an air siren, and the pressure in the pipes doesn't react to age or weather well. It went off again around 3:30.

I got home and answered my e-mail, and there was a private message notification from the United Commonwealth Society message board. I checked my forum inbox and it was from the society's director, informing me that I had been nominated for the position of VP for Canada, meaning I represent Canada (with policy voting rights!) in the monthly board meetings, and I'm the point of contact for Canadians interested in the society. Rather than just being a member of a sometimes volatile discussion board, I'm actually a member and director of a political group.

I must get my bowler hat and overcoat out of mothballs ;)
