Cross of Valour petition
Dec. 7th, 2007 11:03 pmThe petition for ensuring that fallen Constable Chris Garrett receives a Cross of Valour from the Canadian government has passed 38 000 signatures. Hopefully more will follow!
For those who don't remember the story from last time, he was killed by someone who wanted to go on a killing spree, but managed to wound the guy before he got too far. When his friends applied for him to receive the award, they were told that they would have to wait until after the guy's trial was over to ensure he was fairly tried. As the anchorman on the mock news show This Hour Has 22 Minutes put it, the trial was so fair that he was convicted. However, the trial took longer than two years to complete, and Constable Garrett's friends were told they had waited too long and couldn't apply. They thought that this was ridiculous, and so far the Premier of Ontario, the chief of the Ontario Provincial Police, and 38 000 other Canadians agree.
Our 'esteemed' Governor-General Michaƫlle Jean responded by saying that the Prime Minister is responsible for changing the rules, that she was concerned about the amount of police response, and handed over the filed to the Prime Minister's Office so she could go run and hide in a broom closet in Rideau Hall. Now THAT's leadership!
