My quaint little neighbourhood of Preston Heights is about to get a little nicer. To the north side of a neighbourhood dominated by low-income and subsidized housing, with a couple of nice streets here and there, will be added a brand new community of homes for higher-income families. Both townhouses and detached houses will be built in a neighbourhood connected to our roads and erasing a rural road already bisected by Highway 401.
Hopefully this development will lead to a higher class of restaurants and stores; besides our kitschy little Kumon centre, our shopping area currently consists of a chiropractor, a convenience store, a Polish deli, a discount furniture store, a barbershop, and a redneck bar that frequently gets in trouble for selling to minors. If anything, it will boost the number of students at the currently underused public school my mother works at. The rich folks on the other side of Highway 401 may have gotten out of sending their kids here, but they can't come up with an excuse for not sending kids to a school down the street. And it will no doubt lead to a real-life performance of Hating Alison Ashley when the upper crust kids take their seats next to the crumbs.
