It's been a weird weekend
Dec. 6th, 2009 08:07 pmOn Friday my mother took one of the cats to the vet. Our Pepper was ailing--a urinary tract infection as it turned out. Before the appointment, she was talking with the receptionist/assistant about Christmas baking. She mentioned having to add some brandy to her fruitcake, prompting the receptionist to mention her mother's recipe--which doesn't have any. My mother mentioned her grandmother's recipe, which was apparently good, especially compared to the storebought ones with last Easter's candied fruit in it. My mother mentioned that her family in Windsor eat it, which caused the receptionist to mention that her mother's family is from Windsor and that her father's family is from Tecumseh--where my uncle lives.
My mother finally asked her last name, "not that it's going to make a difference--not like you're a Robinet or anything." The receptionist was shocked, because she's descended from my great-grandmother's sister--both of whom were descended from the family patriarch Jules Robinet. It turns out that my mother and the receptionist are second cousins, once removed! Who'd have thought? Her family even has a copy of the family tree my mother made years and years ago for a big family reunion.
Nibs was also at the vet for a regular checkup this past week. He was weighed for the first time since last year--all 19 pounds, 8 ounces of him! That's up from 11 pounds, 3 ounces a year ago. His diet will definitely have to change, though genetics may come in to play as well; his brother, who lives with another family, is even heavier.
It's been decided that the new baby is going to be named Max after the dog in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The others (except Pepper and Tigerlily) are starting to warm to him, but it's still going to be a long time before everyone's adjusted. My father still hasn't acknowledged his existence--he wasn't crazy about another cat moving in to the house.
Yesterday I took my mommy to the Gardens' Christmas party, held at a bowling alley in Burlington. Quite fun, even thought the ball was a bit heavy for me. Managed to get a strike and two spares though! My mother had more experience than most of the people on our lane, so she scored quite well.
