Art that makes you go "Hmmm...."
Oct. 11th, 2010 03:58 pmThe Turbine Hall at London's Tate Modern is currently home to a curious installation: Ai Weiwei's "100 Million Sunflower Seeds". Over the course of two years, Weiwei (designer of the Bird's Nest stadium in Beijing) ordered 100 million porcelain sunflower seeds that were individually shaped, fired, hand-painted, and fired again. Now they are scattered on the floor of the Turbine Hall, scene of 2007's gash known as "Shibboleth."
The name comes from propaganda art during the Cultural Revolution, in which Mao was portrayed as the sun and the Chinese as sunflowers turning towards his glow. Even though Weiwei worked on the 2008 Olympics, he changed his tune as he realized that it was a new Potemkin Village.
