I called my agency in the morning to get a job for today, and reported the place I worked at on Monday:

Me: "I have a safety concern about he place I worked at yesterday. I was working at a press, and to remove the finished products from the moulds, you have to reach into the press, where your hand could be crushed."

Lady on phone: "That is a safety concern!"

Got a (relatively) safer job today: working at a place that makes socks. I was at a small machine that removed excess threads from the leg ends of the socks. A bit dull, but $7.50 an hour. No safety boots needed, but the air above all the workstations was white from the cloth dust. I have to go back there tomorrow--at 7:30 in the morning! Welcome to the working class!

And to top it off, two roads in town were closed today because of an accident and a burst water main. So a 15-minute drive took me an hour to complete--including the ten minutes it required to clean snow and ice off my car. And we'll be getting another foot of it tomorrow!

*curls up into a ball on his bed* I'm not going back out there! You can't make me!

Eesh... Textile mills...

I thought they were done with those in the early 1900's.

My advice to you: get some of those nifty construction/surgical masks and wear them to work. You won't get blacklung from cotton fibers, but I'd imagine it could lead to pneumonia anyway.

It's not a textile mill per se; more of a sock factory. But that doesn't change the dust in the air.

My mother was surprised that no one was wearing a mask either, but then I'm getting used to inadequate safety measures. I had to go out of my way and ask for a pair of earplugs today (I got the last pair they had!), and I worked one place for two days before they realized I didn't have safety shoes.

Thanks for the suggestion, but tomorrow's probably going to be the only other day I work there, so it's not really worth it...

*sighs* I need money...

I can certainly sympathise with that last sentiment.

As for safety concerns... I was chased once by a black Camaro while delivering pizzas. My boss sent me back there three more times that night, despite the fact that there were other drivers available. Eesh.

I think you win the dangerous job award.

I finished my second day there, which included trying to park in a lot with four inches of snow on it and the machine I use being broken for about 20 minutes. If I go back when they reopen after the break, I think I will go with your suggestion of a mask.

Sounds like a good plan. :)
