Well, I was planning to go to Toronto tomorrow with my mother so we could do a few things--she wanted to get some rings resized and I wanted to visit a stationer's store that sells bottled fountain pen ink. However, our plans were brought to an abrupt end by the two words that send a shiver down the spine of every commuter:

Transit strike.

We're not going anywhere...

Blech. Good thing I have no foreseeable plan to visit Toronto. Things like this put the much-criticized DC Metro system into perspective.

Ouch, talk about painful!

Personally, I also take transit to get most places, and would get really annoyed (though probably not quite enough to actually get a license) if the transit over here did that...

Any idea when it'll be over?
I heard that the province is looking into a "back to work" order for them sometime soon.

Yep, they got it stopped tonight, and things will be back to normal by the morning commute tomorrow.

Personally, I think the strike was a mistake. It got absolutely nobody on the union's side, and was stopped before the weekend was done. If anything, it will work against them as the TTC could be declared an essential service, so they can never go on strike. The most they could do is a go-slow or work to rule.

Oh, well. It's over and I'll be going in on Wednesday instead.

Yeah, with a tightly-built city like that, the transit system is an absolute must-run service, so declaring it an essential service really makes a lot of sense.

But over here on the wet coast, the transit system isn't even good enough to cover much if you're not in the right cities, so it doesn't really make sense (yet) to call it essential at all...
