My Organizational Management and the Law professor insisted on having everybody show up on time today because a guest speaker was coming for the first hour of class. He even entertained the idea of shutting the door on anyone who was late so the speaker wouldn't be interrupted.
9:55 AM: class begins. 99% of the class has shown up. Guess who never did.

Date: 2008-10-23 03:12 am (UTC)A real story from my real grandfather - he was a respected attorney, chairman of the Utah State Democratic Party, and professor at the University of Utah law school. He would routinely lock the door as class began, in order to cement the concept of commitment in his students' minds.
One day for reasons unknown, he was late himself - and of course, found the door locked by his delighted students. Undeterred, he went outside, clambered up the fire escape, and came in through the window.
One of his beloved cases went as follows:
F: B buys a case of beer and asks neighbor P to put the beer in his back yard creek to keep it cool for a planned neighborhood party. Neighbor A carts off the beer and drinks it.
I: Is there liability in the case?
N: Definitely. A is liable to P.
Gran'pa's classes were very popular...

Date: 2008-10-30 02:42 am (UTC)Have you considered arriving for class a few minutes earlier for class so as not to miss anything?
(due to transit problems I try to get to class half an hour early so if I'm late, I'm merely on time. But that was when I was taking the closer, twice an hour bus instead of the farther, ten minute bus...)
