Writer's Block: Heavenly Bodies

[Error: unknown template qotd]

I'd want to use a name from Egyptian mythology; we've used Greece and Rome a lot, but not Egypt to a great extent. Isis sounds like a good name for a planet, and she was described in a section of the Book of the Dead as 'Moon Shining Over the Sea.'

Resisting the obvious temptation to name it "Jean", "Ariadne" has a nice ring to it.

Hmm, we don't know yet if the planet has rings....

Mmm, that would be a nice one; I think there's an asteroid named that too (hopefully they don't mind duplicating names).

On another topic, what's with Pony's latest obsession with ice cream?! It's gotten old faster than the 'Krystal can't enjoy her sandwich' thing that was passing around a few months back.

Haven't a clue. I made a not-so-oblique reference to that here.

Koz sent me a PM over at TAC asking the same question...

Yes, I saw that. Very well put!

Had to look that one up. I don't visit FurAffinity or 4chan, so that one passed me by. Strange stuff...

Yeah, it was an odd one. Didn't really get it, myself.

Upon reading your idea, my first thought was someone from Celtic mythology. Then I thought, "Why be so eurocentric? Look up some Asian, African, Amerindian, and Aboriginal gods for ideas."

To name a planet after Yahweh would be too boring.

They've started with Amerindian. One of the dwarf planets discovered a few years ago is named Sedna, after the Inuit goddess of the sea.

With all the planets being discovered, I expect a lot of mythical names are going to be applied to planets. Maybe they could have themes for solar systems and sections of the galaxy.

After going through all the mythical names (Isis, Ra, Kali, Vishnu and the like,) What have we left? Do we start using movie star names next?

[identity profile] dhlawrence.livejournal.com 2009-04-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
We'll probably start going through all the names they made up for Star Trek (Talos Four, Sherman's Planet, etc.). I have a felling the religions of India may stave that off for a good while, though.

So much for going to Fred Astare IV for now! XD

Seriously, they will have to go into the SF books for planetary names, and not just Trek when the day comes.

I wonder how many Gallifreys there will be.

You only need one, and it renews itself whenever it feels need to!
