Canada's oldest mayor, 90-year-old mayor of Mississauga Hazel McCallion, was recently feted by Mike Huckabee on his show on Fox News. Among the accomplishments celebrated were her ability to eliminate Mississauga's debt and keep the budget balanced (they have been debt free for over thirty years). At one point he wished she could run for the US presidency, calling it unfortunate that her birth certificate was Canadian.

Hurricane Hazel's reply? “Not unfortunate it's Canadian, very fortunate it's Canadian.”

90 years old and she can still think on her feet!

She sounds like the kind of politician we'd all be lucky to have, regardless of nation. Of course, I like it when anyone puts Fox news in its place...

She's conservative, but she's the kind of conservative that liberals can vote for without pinching their noses shut. Some of her deals have been a bit suspicious of late, but she's retiring at the end of this term (assuming she doesn't die in office; she is 90).

Reminds me of when a woman finds a gay man attractive and says it's a "waste" that he's gay, to which he replies that other gay men beg to differ.

I saw the Rick Mercer Report episode on Hurricane Hazel, and she's quite the woman.

It's no wonder she's been mayor for so long, she does excellent work.
Though it's a pity we don't have more like her...
